Rommel Aquino MD

Dr. Rommel “MEL” Aquino received his MD degree from the University of the East in the Philippines in 1985 after completing his BS degree major in Zoology from the University of the Philippines. Prior to residency training, he was involved in numerous researches in the fields of medicine and surgery as principal investigator. Most of his research works have  been published in leading medical journals and have won numerous university and national awards. He did his internship at the Maryland General Hospital in Baltimore and finished his Family Medicine residency at the University of Toledo Medical Center (formerly Medical College of Ohio).  He is Board-Certified in Family Medicine and a Diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine. Dr. Mel has worked as a Staff physician for St. Luke’s Hospital of Duluth at the Bay Area Medical Clinic  in Silver Bay, Minnesota and has done urgent care work in Duluth, Minnesota and Superior, Wisconsin. He also worked as an emergency room physician at the Cloquet Community Hospital in Minnesota. He is an active member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, Michigan Academy of Family Physicians, Michigan State Medical Society and the Genesee County Medical Society. A consistent honor student since his elementary days, Dr. Mel’s  excellent medical care has been recognized many times. HealthPlus of Michigan has awarded him a Plaque of Recognition for “Outstanding Achievement in Comprehensive Diabetic Care.” He has also received a Certificate of Excellence in Preventive Medicine in the Ambulatory Setting awarded by the Michigan Governor, Hon. Jennifer Granholm. In 2008, Consumers Research Council of America has voted him as one of “America’s Top Family Doctors.” His office has achieved the highest rating at Level III NCQA Recognition as a Patient-Centered Medical Home. As a former teacher in Physiology, Dr. Mel has incorporated patient education in his practice. To him, an educated patient is a healthy one.
